My article “From the Collection: The Women of Photo-Lettering” just posted to Letterform Archive’s website! When Briar Levit and I presented “Not Typecast: Two Women and Their Typography at Mid-Century,” an online Type Directors Club Salon way back in October 2021, Stephen Coles invited me to contribute what—after a bit more than a year and a half—you’ll see online today. Thank you to Stephen Coles, Tanya George, Amelia Hugill-Fontanel (Associate Curator of the Cary Collection, RIT Libraries), and Florian Hardwig!

Your article took me back to the days when I was in intern at WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Maryland (in the1980’s). I learned how to used a VGC PhotoTypositor which proved to reinforce the skills I had learned in my Typography class at Maryland Institute College of Art. From today’s standards it was time consuming and also toxic to use (you couldn’t avoid inhaling the photo chemicals). It did however force you to make very calculated choices to font, pt. size and kerning—all skills that (sadly) are not always seen on broadcast TV today!
